10 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT SONKO RESCUE TEAM

  1. Senator Mike Sonko stole the idea of the Recue Team from a youth groups and decided to politicize it as a tool to fight his opponents. The initial founders were then ejected after they refused to continue with a political agenda while the development projects they were promised failed to materialize.
  2. Sonko Rescue Team has been accused of using its ambulances to transport drugs at specific locations. Due to the political protection he offered the Acting inspector general of police ordered a blanket ban on vehicles that did not have the required designation in order to curtail the expanding fleet of unregistered ambulances under Sonko Rescue Team.
  3. Part of the job of Sonko Rescue Team Motorcycles is to distribute drugs within the deepest sections of the slums where none of the ambulances can access.
  4. Many arson attacks are being linked to the group. Sonko Rescue Team is only at hand when video cameras are recording and it has led many slum dwellers to suspect that the group lights the fires only to come assist residents for camera effect. The senator then swoops in with donations and gives massive promises on which he partially delivers or does not follow up outright.
  5. Also related to the point above, the Sonko Rescue Team motorcycles are used to light fires in the slums as they offer arsonists quick getaway means before slum residents can mobilize to apprehend them.
  6. Sonko Rescue Team has been operating illegally since its inception. This forced Senator Mike Sonko to hurriedly organize a much publicized receipt of registration from the NGO Coordination board because the law enforcement agencies were about to catch up with him. The hope here is that he can rally civil society actors to his side if ever he is caught on the wrong side of the law.
  7. Part of its mandate was to heckle and embarrass other political leaders in Nairobi. Following the fact that Sonko’s had a very bleak Senatorial record the strategy was to pull all other Nairobi leaders down with him MP Maina Kamanda, Women Rep Rachel Shebesh, and MP Dennis Waweru all felt the brunt of Sonko Rescue Team. He also turned his attention to the Governor Evans Kidero as a stepping stone in beginning his gubernatorial campaign.
  8. Eastleigh resident stopped Sonko Rescue Team in their estate dumping activities after their much publicized clean up public relations stunt backfired. Members of the team were forced by residents to explain where they were taking the rubbish forcing the Mike Sonko TV to stage a Dandora dumping video exercise to cover their tracks.
  9. Gangsters in Nairobi have been using Sonko Rescue Team as a means of hiding out from police. The program apparently runs rehabilitation and demobilization initiatives where Senator Sonko offers money for a return of guns or ammunition. Once the gangsters know the police are hot on their trail they offer up their weapons for the money, pretend to have reformed then return to their crooked ways once police have turned their attention to other criminals and they believe things have cooled down enough for them to rob, rape and plunder their neighborhoods.
  10. During the Tumechoka protests on insecurity in Kenya against Cabinet Secretary Joseph Ole Lenku, Sonko Rescue Team members were coordinating street boys with daggers to stab activist Boniface Mwangi. The youths were spotted right outside the office of the President asking who Boniface was because they were so drunk and could not recognize the man they had been ordered to target. Eventually police stepped in to put a protective ring between them and Boniface while the coordinators were asked to leave.
